My Crazy World by Brenda Dyer – Plus A Giveaway!!!

Woo Hoo! I have an amazing writer on the blog today! Her stories captivate me, draw me in and heat me in all kinds of places! But you know what? As great a writer as she is (and she is! She is!) she’s an even better person and how often can you say that about someone!!!

Brenda is giving away a copy of Love’s Prophecy!! Read to the end to find out how to win it!!!

Welcome, Brenda!

rsz_amazon_copy

Before I get started, I would like to say a huge thank you to Kary for having me on her blog. THANK YOU, KARY!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Brenda. I’m a writer and lover of paranormal romance. I fell in love with the paranormal romance genre many years ago. Although there are many creatures staring in paranormal romance stories, my heart belongs to one: the vampire.

Vampires are very versatile creatures. Some like to portray them as evil, some as good. And some as good and evil. For me, I went the side of good.

When I asked Kary what topic she would like me to talk about today, her request thrilled me. She asked if I would talk about demons, vampires, The Creator, lesser gods and humans, and how they all fit together in the world—history—I have created.

Sit back, grab a coffee or tea—or something stronger—and let’s begin the history lesson, lol.

In the beginning, The Creator made His lesser gods—or angels as we humans call them. As years past, He yearned to create more children. These would be his second offspring. He called them humans. But these children would live a different life than the angels. Humans would spend part of their lives separate from those who resided in The Sacred Dimension—heaven.

The Creator instructed his angels to craft a splendid planet—a copy of The Sacred Dimension—a perfect paradise. This planet was called Earth. Unbeknownst to all angels, Earth would become home to humans until death brought their souls back to heaven.

LOL, are ya with me so far? Or have I bored you to tears?

So, while working hard—with his brothers and sisters—to bring the picture in his father’s mind to reality, Lucifer fell in love with his creation. If you are interested in learning more about this through Lucifer’s eyes, and a deeper, more detailed look into the history behind my books, check out my website under the page titled Lucifer. http://www.brendamdyer.com

When the angels finished, they split back to the Sacred Dimension…except Lucifer. He loved the Earth so much he decided to make it his home. But The Creator had a different idea. He called Lucifer back home.

Once the angels were gathered together, The Creator broke the glorious news about humans. Well, to say Lucifer was pissed off is a massive understatement. He flipped out. The Creator stood firm and told Lucifer to accept the way things were.

Years went by, and Lucifer’s anger festered. He watched from the Sacred Dimension as humans destroyed what he’d lovingly brought to life. His hatred grew, not only toward humans, but also toward his father. Finally, he came up with a plan. He would destroy humans and take back what was his.

During this time, Vampier—an angel—created his own children in secret. He fashioned them after humans because he believed them to be the picture of grace and beauty. These children he called vampires.

So, back to Lucifer. Well, he set his plan in motion. He used the Earth to help aid him in the destruction of humans—pretty fitting, wouldn’t ya say, lol? He turned the Earth from a thriving paradise into a dangerous, frightening world.

As you can probably guess, The Creator put a stop to this. He also banned Lucifer from ever stepping foot back on Earth, and from the Sacred Dimension. This just added more fuel to Lucifer’s rage. But what could he do? He knew The Creator and his brothers and sisters were watching him. So, he hid on a desolate rock called the Forgotten Realm, located on the outskirts of The Creator’s universe. There he came up with another plan. If he couldn’t destroy human’s himself, he would send others to do it. But killing them wasn’t good enough. No, he wanted their SOULS. That would for sure stick it to his dad—let him know what it felt like to have something you love completely ripped away.

Enter demons. Demons are Lucifer’s children. He tried to create them in the image of humans, but since all he had left in his heart was hatred and evil, his children turned out as twisted, hideous monsters. These creatures wouldn’t fool humans or The Creator. Hmm, how to solve this dilemma…

So, back to the Sacred Dimension. Obviously, The Creator found out about Vampier’s little secret. Well to Vampier’s surprise, The Creator didn’t destroy vampires. Instead, he allowed them to live on Earth with humans. But there was a hefty price for them to pay: to protect humans from all dangers. During this time, humans and vampires struck up a perfect partnership.

When Lucifer caught wind of this, he freaked! His brother disobeyed their father and he got rewarded for it? This he would not stand for. Time to initiate his new plan: use human bodies to house his demon’s spirits in. This way they could move undetected on Earth, corrupting humans, turning them from their Creator.

But one thing Lucifer didn’t bargain for was vampires could sense the demons, and they were hard to kill and corrupt, unlike humans.

I’m going to skip some details here so I can bring this to a close. So now we come to The Vampire Prophecy. The Creator knew a time would come when the vampires would need help to turn the tides of this endless war. When He learned of Lucifer’s latest treachery—the demons—He came up with a plan of His own. This plan involved both of the Earth’s children: humans and vampires. He scripted The Vampire Prophecy, and Vampier sent it into the hands of the first king of the fifty vampire clans on Earth. The Prophecy was keep guarded and secret, known only to the kings of the clans.

As the years flew by, The Prophecy became myth. Soon, it was forgotten.

Fast forward to the year 2012. Enter Mel from the 26th clan of vampires—the hero in Love’s Prophecy, and Kal from the 5th clan of vampires—hero in Prophecy’s Child, book #2 in the Prophecy Series.

In the beginning of Love’s Prophecy, Mel and Kal find out The Vampire Prophecy has been discovered.  When Mel meets Breeana—heroine of Love’s Prophecy—he learns there is something very…unique about her.

The time has come for the two shall make one. From light and dark, look for the mark…

And the story begins…

Thank you so much for hanging around and reading my looong post.

If you are at all curious to find out more, pick up a copy of Love’s Prophecy and Prophecy’s Child. You won’t be sorry.

And for being such wonderful sports and reading my long post—without skimming, lol, I’m giving away an e-copy of Love’s Prophecy and Prophecy’s Child in your format of choice.

Leave a comment, which book you would prefer to read—or both, and your email addy for a chance to win.

Since I’m essentially pimping my new release, Prophecy’s Child, I’ll leave you with the blurb and an excerpt.

Thank you all for being such great sports and putting up with my long-winded post.

Brenda – I love your unique world! The Prophecy always gives me chills!

Blurb for Prophecy’s Child

His secret will shatter her world.

Katherine Colby’s life splintered ten years ago when her lover suddenly vanished, leaving her with more than a broken heart. But when Kal unexpectedly makes an appearance, her safe, dependable existence is shattered once more. Drawn into Kal’s deadly world of vampires and demons, she must now put aside her hurt and anger and learn to trust him. Can she forgive past deceptions and find the courage to love again? Or will she turn away the one man who owns her heart and soul?

Her secret will change his life.

Powerful, and lethal, Kal is a vampire warrior, sworn to protect humans from demons. Loving Katherine too much to pull her into his dangerous world, Kal deserted her, believing his decision was best for them both. But not even time could assuage his yearning for the woman who has captured his heart. As fate tosses them together once again, Kal must fight to win Katherine’s trust and forgiveness before evil separates them forever. But is he ready to become the man she needs him to be? Or will he lose the one woman he can’t live without?

Excerpt:

Katherine shrugged, hoping to appear nonchalant, though inside, her emotions rolled like an ocean during a hurricane. “A child normally expects their parents to shelter and protect them, but not mine. They tossed me away like garbage. My God-fearing parents felt it was God’s will that they turn their backs on me. I sinned and had to pay the price.” She squeezed her eyes shut for a second. “Although, they were kind enough to let me know they’d pray for my soul and the soul of my child.

“For nineteen goddamn years I tried to be the model daughter.  And when I needed them the most…” Tears spilled over her lashes and her throat ached. “They…Oh, God…”

A damn burst, and years of pent up frustrations and hurt flooded over her carefully constructed barriers. She hugged her middle in a feeble attempt to keep herself together. Kal and her living room blurred as tears tracked down her cheeks. A hoarse sob tore from her lips. “How could they do that to me? I needed them—I had no one—nowhere to go.”

Furiously, she fought to harness her emotions, but when Kal’s arms encircled her and pulled her into his embrace, her willpower wobbled.

Katherine wanted to scream at him to release her, but tears clogged her throat. She couldn’t force the words out. With her hands planted on his pecs, she tried to push out of his grasp. Her efforts were pitiful. Instead, he held her face next to his chest with one hand on the back of her head.

“You’re not alone anymore,” Kal whispered against her hair. “Please, Kat. Give me another chance—I’ll make it up to you and Ike. I promise.”

A moan, sounding like a wounded animal, ripped from her throat. Instead of escaping, she gripped his shirt tight as if her life depended on it, and buried her face under his chin.

If only she could believe his words. She was so lonely and tired of shouldering all the responsibility.

The feel of a strong pair of arms around her was her undoing. Just for a moment, she’d allow herself this weakness. And for the first time in years, Katherine let go of her self-control and cried.

My Two Princesses Have a Home

I am thrilled to announce my Two Princess Stories– The Pirate Princess and The Prospective Princess have a wonderful new home —

bpg-badge

These two fantasy stories are some of the most romantic books I’ve ever written with two noble heroes and a pirate heroine. I can’t wait to work with the amazing editorial department at Boroughs and ultimately share them with you.

Here is the Series Overview and the working blurbs:

Overview

QoJlargeFive years after the end of Queen of Jastain, two couples fight for Light and for love on the stormy South Seas.

While the new queen’s reign has dispelled most Dark strongholds left by Seppitent, the evil creature who was defeated when the Crown of Light was restored, small factions of rebels remain, the largest of which is the Southern Isle of Isa Vis.

When the corrupt Emperor Hanar of Isa Vis is denied an alliance, he employs pirates to kidnap the daughter of the Grand Duke of Komissa in hopes of gaining a foothold in the Kingdom of Light. Hanar forces Lady Brislyn into an engagement with his son Enriq, the crown prince.

This incident results in a quest for two couples who have a part to play in defeating the emperor. Each of the four, with his or her special Gift of the Implanting, is necessary to end the Darkness and restore peace over the Isle of Isa Vis. As they learn to trust one another, love grows between the couples and the Light’s purpose is revealed.

The Pirate Princess, Book One

When it appears the opportunity for true love has abandoned him, Prince Petra of the Kingdom of Light determines to secure an engagement to Lady Brislyn of Komissa, a woman for whom he has the highest regard but does not love. Upon learning that the dark emperor has kidnapped his betrothed, Petra and the commander of her father’s armies must band together to rescue her. On the voyage to save the lady, Petra runs afoul of Charlee, the bewitching pirate captain who holds him hostage with more than just her sword.

Seeking freedom from the sea, Charlee uses her strong attraction for the prince and challenges Petra to a seductive wager: If he takes her body before they reach the City of Light, she wins absolution. If he holds to his moral values, she will help him rescue his intended bride. But when a brutal attack destroys the crew and her ship, Charlee must do the one thing she has sworn never to do again—trust a man.

Even if the couple survives the storm, how can their growing love survive Charlee’s murderous past and Petra’s promise to another woman?

The Prospective Princess, Book Two

When the Dark Emperor Hanar kidnaps Lady Brislyn of Komissa, she is forced into an engagement with his son the mysterious Enriq, crown prince of Isa Vis. While she frantically searches for a way of escape, she must navigate the politics of an evil Emperor and try to determine who she can trust to get her back to her true love, Marchant.

After Lady Brislyn is abducted, Commander Marchant, leader of the armies of Komissa, seeks help from the Kingdom of Light. Assuming Brislyn is captured by the evil Emperor, March grudgingly agrees to his true love’s betrothal to Prince Petra to deter her kidnapers from a forced marriage.

During the rescue voyage, pirates attack and capture the prince, leaving Marchant and the crew for dead in open water. The commander struggles to find his way to Brislyn with the help of Marisol, a secretive young woman with her own vendetta against the emperor. Somehow he must save Prince Petra from pirates and Brislyn from the crown prince without breaking his word or his own heart in the process.

Top Ten Movies That Make Me Cry

In Case you missed my post on the Cover Contessa earlier this week, I reposted my Top Ten List here.

These movies are so worthy. I encourage you to take the time to see a few of them.

BlogTourKR

I’m excited to share some of my All-Time Favorite Movies. I know some people don’t like to cry, but I do. I love it when art can invoke an emotion so deep it brings tears to my eyes. So today I’m listing the best of the best—the movies that never fail (no matter how many times I’ve seen them) to make me cry.

Top Ten List

1. Terms of Endearment (1983) – Many of these movies can produce tears if I think about a scene, but this particular movie has several scenes that can produce racking sobs.

2. Life is Beautiful (1997) – This is the only foreign movie on the list even though there are plenty to choose from. This movie is one is my all-time favorites. It tickles you with humor all the while it’s plotting to rip your heart out. It is an amazing film with a powerful message you will never forget…and you never should.

3. Simon Birch (1998) – an unlikely hero with a small body but faith enough to make up the difference. Powerful and inspiring.

4. Steel Magnolias (1989) – Not only one of the saddest movies ever made, also one of the funniest. “My mama always said, if you can’t find anything good to say about anybody come sit by me.”

5. Imitation of Life (1959) – If you haven’t told your mother how much you appreciate her lately, watch this movie – you’ll gain new perspective.

6. Toy Story 3 (2010)– This is my token animated film. I swear I was watching it a week ago with the kids (for the 60th time) and I’m balling my eyes out and they’re looking at me like I’ve got Cooties.

7. The Notebook (2004) – We all know that Nicholas Sparks should have his own category – so instead of bogging the list down with 10 of his movies, I picked my favorite.

8. Titanic (1997) – Big ship, Epic Love Story. Tragic Ending. Even the song can make me mist up.

9. Dead Poets Society (1989)– When young Eathan Hawk steps up on that desk and says, “Oh Captain, my Captain.” my face twists into an Oprah-Ugly-Cry.

10. Love Story (1970) – the quintessential tragic love story of the 70s (and there were many that decade). But who knew that 30 years later the star would play it out again with his real-life love.

Hope that brought back good cathartic memories and gave you inspiration for new ones. My new release, A Taylor-Made Life, is a tearjerker. I hope you get a chance to check it out too.

My month long blog tour with my amazing publicist, Christine Marie, begins next week on August first! I have a ton of prizes to give away. Lots of facts to share and most importantly I’ll be showcasing my new release, A Taylor-Made Life. I hope you have a chance to stop by and see me on the tour!

Excerpt for

A Taylor-Made Life by Kary Rader

“So that’s it, then? You’re just gonna leave?” Everything inside me fell to my toes.

He smiled sympathetically. My hands fisted. Slapping the pacifying expression off his face crossed my mind.

“Hey. It won’t be that bad.” He reached out to brush my arm but let his fingers fall short. “We’ll talk on the phone, and maybe you and your Mom can come for a visit in a few weeks.”

He leaned to kiss my cheek, but I stuck my fingers over his lips. His mouth was soft and warm. Heat spread from my fingers into my arm and through my body. I pulled my hand away so I could concentrate. I was not about to let this end here. “I don’t want a kiss on the cheek, Gavin.”

“I understand.” He held out his hand for me to shake. Captain Oblivious.

I crinkled my nose and frowned. “No. You don’t understand. I want a kiss, but not on the cheek.”

He rubbed a palm across his forehead. “Taylor, we’ve gone over this.”

“No, we haven’t. You’re leaving and—let’s face it—I’ll never see you again. You know it, and I know it.” My voice broke. I stood tall and continued, “You came here to mentor me, take me on a few outings, and give me happy memories. You’ve done that. But I’m asking for one last thing.” I twirled my hair and met his gaze. “I want a real kiss.”

He started shaking his head before I’d even finished. “No.”

Crud-ola! “Why not?”

“Taylor, you know the answer. I told you from the beginning. It’s not appropriate.”

He hadn’t said he didn’t want to. I glared at him and decided to pull out the big guns. “It’s one harmless kiss, Gavin, and it’s a dying girl’s wish.”

His jaw twitched. “That’s not fair, and you know it.”

“Fair? Are we talking about fair now? What’s not fair is that I’ll never get married or have children or even be in love. You’re all I get.” I waved my hand between us. “This is all I get.”

He set his jaw stubbornly, but his eyes betrayed him. “I’ve offered you what I’m willing to give.”

Tears stung my eyes. Damn it. I hated crying, but I couldn’t help it. He’d hit the nail. “You’re no better than those doctors offering me another round of chemo, knowing it won’t do any good and would only make me weaker, sicker.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Well, I won’t settle for less. I’m settling for too little as it is.” I swiped at my stupid tears. My pulse pounded. I was fighting with everything I had. “How many women have you been with?”

He squinted in apparent disbelief. “What kind of question is that?”

I stamped my foot. “How many?”

He almost yelled it at me. “A few.”

“Do you remember how it felt to be with them? To love them? Would you trade those memories because a few people said it wasn’t okay?”

He darted his gaze around the front yard, shifting his weight from side to side. Even in the dim light of the porch I could see his mind working through possibilities, making him uncomfortable.

“There’s no one out there in the dark to tell you it’s okay. You have to decide.” I pressed on. “What memory do you want to leave me with? What memory do you want to take? Is it really such a sickening thought? Just one kiss.”

He stared back at me with a wildness that scared me. My heart drummed a xylophone chord across my ribs.

Taylor.…

I locked in on his gaze and stepped toward him. “Tonight you get to decide what you can live with—or without. I’m asking for one moment.”

Stopping inches from him, I absorbed the tension like a thirsty towel. Electric sparks flew between us. The only sounds were our shallow breaths.

Softly, I went in for the kill. “A kiss goodnight. Is it really too much, Gavin?”

Mid-summer Night’s Dream Guy Blog Hop

I love the Just Romance Me Blog Hoppers! You guys are the best and I can’t think of anyone I’d rather share my good news with.

Yesterday a momentous thing happend. My 2nd book was released. The story of my heart and soul, this book is almost as dear as my children and born out of the emotions I experienced while my husband battled stage IV melanoma.

I spent the better part of two years writing it and trying to get it published, but every door I knocked on slammed shut. But now here I am and here the story is. I hope it blesses you as much as it has blessed me. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned with this story – it is more than just a tale or words on a page.

Is it really too much, Gavin?”

taylor-web-copyHave you ever done something and said, “Wow, that was good, but I can’t take any credit for it.” because in your heart you knew you were only an instrument?

Well, that’s how I feel about this book. It’s a story that has taken more from me and demanded more of me than any other I’ve ever written or, I suspect, ever will write. But I can take no credit.

Six years ago while I was pregnant with my youngest child, my husband was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma cancer. I watched while he suffered and endured harsh chemical treatments and brutal surgeries. During the brightest hours my faith soared, but during the dark times it felt like a tiny pin prick of light, illuminating nothing but my fear.

Thank God, my sweet husband recovered and has been cancer free for 5 years. No one but me and my God knows what happened inside me during that time.

Almost two years ago, a dear friend’s 2-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer and all those feelings of helplessness came flooding back. I prayed, “What can I do?” and the scripture Acts 3:6 came to me, Silver and Gold have a none but such as I have give I thee. I write stories. It’s what I had. And that’s what I gave to honor God and support my friend on the hard road of life.

My personal experience with cancer gave me an insight that I’m glad to have, not that I would wish for it, but I’m thankful for the understanding.

So I wrote A Taylor-Made Life with that in my heart and mind. I pray God uses it as He intends and from it, people will be touched.

Blurb:

They lived the life they were given; they loved the life they made.

Cheerleader Taylor Smith doesn’t want to die a virgin. Unfortunately, if the terminally-ill leukemia patient doesn’t find a lover or a stem-cell match within months, her fear will become reality. But when her cancer mentor is revealed to be a hottie entrepreneur from California, it seems fate might finally be on her side.

Tech-geek Gavin Taylor has everything he ever wanted, except someone to grieve for him when he’s gone. With his melanoma cancer beyond the help of his riches, he agrees to participate in a cancer patient mentoring program where he’s matched with a dying teen from Texas. Despite his immediate attraction, the Silicon Valley whiz intends only to provide friendship and happy memories to the beautiful, young woman who is determined to win his love.

When it’s discovered that his frozen sperm and her harvested eggs could lead to a cure, Taylor’s mother offers to be a surrogate. And Gavin must decide if he can risk the heart he has never given and a child he’ll never know to a girl he just met.

He lay in his bed in the Smiths’ guest room. The full moon peeked through the mini-blinds and cast slatted shadows over the bed. He’d tossed and turned for the last two hours even though his body should’ve been exhausted. He’d tried breathing exercises, stretches, a small snack he’d snuck down to the kitchen for. But nothing worked.

The door of his room creaked open, Taylor’s pajama-clad form silhouetted in the frame.

“Are you awake?” she whispered.

“Yeah. Are you?” he whispered back.

She snickered quietly and closed the door. “No. I’m sleepwalking.”

He laughed.

“Shh. You’ll wake the neighbors.” The edge of the bed gave as she sat.

Staring at her, he was barely able to make out her face in the dark. Lines of moonlight fell across her body. “What couldn’t wait until morning?”

She wrung her hands in her lap. “I couldn’t sleep.”

“And you thought I could help or keep you company?”

The shadows of her shoulders moved in a shrug. “I don’t know. I keep thinking…I can’t get Rachel out of my head. You know, I told her about you. About our kiss.”

His mouth went dry, and he tried to steady his voice. “Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Her voice broke, and the bed shook with her quiet sobs.

He scooted toward her and wrapped her up in his arms. Taylor needed to grieve for her friend, the brave young woman Rachel had been and the one she never got the chance to be. Nothing wounded the soul like a fresh life cut too short. She cried, and he let her.

After a while the tears dried. The silence of night stretched over the room.

He could make out the soft rise and fall of her chest. “Can you reach my overnight bag at the foot of the bed?”

She leaned over and looked. “I think so.”

“Right on top is a stuffed animal. It’s for you.”

She grabbed the white bear and sat up next to him. “When did you get this?”

The wonder in her voice made him smile. Out of all the things he could give her, she was thrilled with a little bear. “I bought it at the hospital before we left. When I thought I was leaving.”

“Oh.” Her voice fell in disappointment.

“But I want you to have it now. For Rachel.”

She held the bear out and lifted it even with her face. “Then I’ll name her Racer15. That was Rachel’s online name.” She hugged the toy with a gasp as if to stay a new flow of tears. “I taught her how to play LAION and Rift. She was pretty good, too.” She turned her head toward him. “You know, lots of the kids in the ward play your games.”

A chill rose over his body. “I didn’t know that.”

“They occupy the empty hours but it’s more than that. They make us feel like we can fight and win. And when we don’t, there’s always another life waiting to be played.”

The holiness of the moment crashed over him like a tidal wave. He’d never realized he’d helped anyone. It was all fun and games, or so he’d thought, and it suddenly brought the true value of his company into focus. And it made the urgency to find someone to preserve it more acute.

“Gavin, how did you find out?” Her quiet voice broke through his thoughts.

He didn’t have to see her face to know what she was asking. “I went to the dermatologist for a mole that was growing on my left shoulder blade. He told me not to worry. That it was a normal mole.” He fluffed up his pillows and leaned back against the headboard. “Six months later it had grown so big I insisted he remove it, regardless. Three hours after leaving the office, he called me back in. It was malignant, Stage IV Melanoma.”

Taylor angled toward him. “Were you scared?”

He shook his head. “Not at first. I thought skin cancer was on the skin. And they’d gotten that, right? But when the doctor scheduled me for an MRI, a PET scan and got me an appointment with an oncologist, I realized it was something much more serious.

“In the first scan, they found a small spot on my liver and several lymph nodes. I had surgeries to remove those and began Interferon treatment.” He snorted derisively. “That was bullshit. Interferon was never designed for melanoma, but because it has no unique treatment path, the doctors treat it like other types of cancer. But the chance that Interferon will work on a melanoma patient is less than twenty percent. When I asked the doctor how I’d know if the cancer was gone, he said, ‘if it doesn’t ever come back.’”

Taylor sucked in a long breath.

He could feel her gaze on him and took her hand, the warmth radiating up his arm into his chest. “After a year, I completed the Interferon and waited. I had PET scans and MRIs done quarterly. Six months ago they found more, and I started a clinical trial, because I sure as shit wasn’t going through the torture of Interferon again with no better odds.” He dropped her hand and rubbed his face. “The trial failed, although it slowed down the spread. Now, I wait.”

“Did the doctors give you…a timeline?”

“Pinning them down for a definitive answer is like trying to catch a fish with your bare hand. My oncologist, Dr. Monroe, gives his best guess. They do what they can.” Not that he particularly wanted to know the exact date and time. It numbed him to think about it. “Six months to two years. But they don’t know.”

Her voice was soft and full of emotion. “I’m sorry. I hate it. Cancer is the ugliest thing in this world.”

He couldn’t disagree with that. “How about you?”

“I collapsed while I was on a date with Matt and was rushed to the hospital. I thought, at first, I’d overexerted myself at cheerleading practice.”

He grinned at the thought of her in a short little skirt with pompoms in her hands.

“But when they took my blood, they found my white counts were really high. They ran more tests and diagnosed me with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. A week later I had my spleen removed and, at the demand of my mother, started four weeks hormone therapy where they harvested six of my eggs. Then I got the first of forty-four weeks of chemo cocktail split into three phases. The funny thing is—AML is rare in people under forty and much more common in men than women. So I guess my blood cells think I’m old man.”

An old man? I don’t think so. A small laugh spilt from him as he allowed his gaze to wander down the outline of her body against the darkness. Her skin glowed in the moonlight and his breath caught in his throat with the desire to nuzzle his nose at her neck.

She propped her chin up with her fist, her elbow resting on her knee. “I lost my hair and all my friends, including Matt. High school kids are like herds grazing in the flatlands. When a predator comes, they run, but once the danger’s gone, they go back to living their lives like nothing’s happened. Even if the lion is eating their best friend a few yards away.”

She picked at a thread on the blanket. “But by the end of the treatment I was in remission.”

The very scenario she’d described was the whole fucking reason he didn’t have friends, and to think of her in the hospital, scared and abandoned, made him want to break something. No one knew better than him how cruel kids could be. He took a deep breath. “How long were you in remission?”

“Five and a half months. When they found the cancer again, I immediately started a new twenty-two weeks of chemo, and the doctors began searching for a bone marrow match.”

His chest tightened. Through the dark he focused on her face for any inkling she knew he was a transplant match. She didn’t appear to. Was he a selfish bastard like her friends? He sure felt like one, but he kept his mouth closed.

“After they’d done a boatload of tests and my chemo was completed, they sent me home. That was three weeks ago. Right now, if you drew my blood, I’d have no cancer cells, but in three to six months, I will. The timelines are wonky for sure. The doctors can’t give answers; they can only guess. But they’re pretty sure without a transplant I won’t make it to my nineteenth birthday.”

They sat in silence.

He wanted to comfort her, take away the pain.

Taylor laid her hands on her legs with a clap. “Well, aren’t we a bundle of good cheer? I bet I can sleep peacefully now.”

Her sarcasm caused a grin to spread over his face, and the heaviness of the moment lifted a little. The lines of right and wrong blurred in his mind. If he could give her a little comfort, then he needed to. He scooted over and raised the covers. “Here, get in.”

Even in the dark, he could see her jaw fall open and eyes round. “Really? You don’t think it’s….”

He raised his eyebrows with unspoken concern. “Probably.”

She slipped in next to him and warmed the chill he hadn’t known he suffered. Peace washed over him as he wrapped his arms around her. She snuggled close, and they both fell asleep.
